                           Waka ama Prizegiving

On Sunday night Carlos, Chloe my Dad and I went to the ramp near Panama road.

The ramp is where we watch Carlos practice his Waka ama. Sometimes, early and other times it finishes really late. Next to the ramp is a club area, and that’s where we had our prizegiving. It was supposed to start at 6:00 pm we got there on time, but when we arrived it didn’t even start yet because other people were still using the club. We waited for a while, then my sister and I got bored so we walked down the hill and stood on the actual ramp. My hair started to get messy from all the wind so I asked my sister (Chloe) if she could braid my hair, I sat down on a chair and she started braiding. By the time she finished we walked up and everyone was already upstairs in the room, waiting for the prizegiving to start. We quickly rushed upstairs but we were too scared to walk in because there was a lady greeting everyone and saying thanks to everyone for coming.

So Chloe and I just waited outside, while we were waiting outside I was looking around to see if there were any spare seats left. A while after she greeted everyone, the manager of Carlos’ Waka team (Amanda) and another parent that supported the team went outside for a quick stroll around, told us to sit in their seats we didn’t really want to but then I just thought to myself that maybe they said that because they wanted us to save their seats, as soon as I thought of that I told Chloe then we headed towards the seats, and sat down. When we saw them approach the table we thought that we would have to move out of their seats, instead we ended up moving to the side so that they could fit their chairs in. After a while Chloe and I started to play hangman on a piece of paper, in the middle of the game a man stood up and told us a speech, to me the main idea he was talking about was to succeed in school and get a useful job.

He had finished saying his speech, then most of the boys stood up and walked outside to grab all the food that was waiting in another room. What we had to eat was hangi, it is a maori food that they boil up, in a tin foil container, it was packed with boiled vegetables, boiled piece of pork a boiled chicken leg and substance that I couldn’t explain but it was good. We had all finished our and after we were given the opportunity to choose what we wanted to eat fruit or cake, unfortunately another parent that was sitting on our table chose cake, and the only reason that I didn’t really want cake was because it was red velvet cake, and I didn’t really like red velvet. But after I ate 2 pieces of cake, I stopped because I thought that it would get nicer, but instead it was getting even more gross. Luckily a few minutes after that the fruit finally came to our table, even though it was just pineapple it was still nice. At first I thought that the pineapple would be really sour, but it ended up being really sweet. I’m really excited until my prizegiving comes up. And get an oppurtunity to win medals for waka ama.

                                              Kids for Kids

It was Monday the 14th of November which was the day we get our voices ready and dress our best for Kids for Kids. Kids for Kids is a really exciting and fun event. The part of our class that was doing Kids for Kids had to come to school before 8:00 or else we would miss our ride. Luckily most of us made it get our ride, Mrs. Dines our teacher called out the role for the students that were coming, unfortunately, two people wasn’t to come early.

There were two shuttles/mini vans one for girls and the other for boys. We didn’t really want to go in the white van because the maroon looking van looked more modern, fortunately, the man had told us to hop in the maroon shuttle. It was so comfortable in the van and felt way better than the white, but then it was getting hot and there were no windows only the two for the passenger and the driver. Our windows were tinted though so if we fell off to sleep no one would see us. Instead of using the shortcut on our way there for practice the driver didn’t know and took a long way, it felt like we were going to get there and it would be finished. Finally, we arrived and the boys kept on saying “You took for ages”, “We know” we replied. We walked in and luckily, we were still having to wait for one more school. A lady had come up onto the stage and introduced herself, her name was Dana she told us of how she had found out about Kids for Kids. Later on, she was calling out all the school’s names, once she called out our name we raised our hands to show that we were there. Walking up the stairs was kind of scary because of how broken it was, and it was crowded. We got in our places pulled our chairs out and had gotten ready for Jackie and Nathan to come out. Jackie and Nathan finally made it onto the stage and we started clapping since they were the main people.

It was really fun because they taught us all sorts of moves to go with the song we would sing, my favorite for the moves and singing was ‘Rain’. As soon as practice ended we hopped into the shuttles and went back to school. When school had finally finished I quickly walked back to my nana’s house and changed into my clothes for the actual Kids for Kids. The people who were going to Kids for Kids had to have a big snack because we wouldn’t be able to eat while we were there because we were just going to sing. As the time flew by it hit five o'clock and my aunt drove me back to school so we could go to the Kids for Kids from there. She had dropped me off near the classroom, I started to walk along room 8 and 7 and I had seen Lasike and his cousin Patelesio. For some reason as soon as I saw them I started to run to the office, fortunately, Mrs. Dines was just walking to the office I had caught up to her and we walked in the office. I entered room 2 and there was no one but Sister. Evalesi, I walked around in the room and had seen Lasike and Patelesio outside on the park I tried to get their attention to say that they had to come inside, they didn’t see me so I was going to go outside to tell them to come inside but I wasn’t allowed to because we had to keep the door locked. Everyone had eventually entered the room so as we were all sitting down she had called out the role for the people who were supposed to be there to go, fortunately, everyone was here. We had all rushed outside because of how excited we were, luckily we had the same maroon shuttle/minivan but the white might have been in use because instead there was an old white shuttle/minivan, still we were grateful that we still had a ride to get to Kids for Kids. The girls went in the maroon shuttle/minivan and the boys had gone to the white.

This time we had a different driver we didn’t ask for his name but we knew that he was different, on our way there it was actually shorter than before of how we were going there for practice. We had finally arrived and we all stretched out, unfortunately, we came in too early and the doors were closed, we weren’t allowed in until most of the other schools had come. So instead of just standing around we decided to play the mannequin challenge until we got bored, so we just went on with playing banana split and ninja. Just as we were in our last game, we didn’t notice that the schools were surrounding us. The doors finally opened and as we walked in it had already gotten stuffy in the air. Before entering the actual hall that we would be singing in, we had to do a little warm up first. There was a man who had introduced himself, I've forgotten his name but he shouted each of our school's names if we were here and we had to shout back “YES! After running out of breath from shouting all the time, the staff had finally told us to enter. Once we were in, there were a lot of people but the Year 8’s were used to it because we had experienced it before. They called out every single school that was here and organized us of where we were sitting, the last time we had sat on the seats we were right at the top, but this time we sat nearly at the bottom. The very first thing we did after we sat down was to wait for Jackie and Nathan to come out and introduce themselves and us. They weren’t teaching us the moves for the songs anymore obviously because we had to remember the moves which they taught us during practice. I didn’t really remember the moves myself, but instead of doing nothing I just decided to moderately look around to see what the other people were doing. Finishing up in the first half of singing we went back stage, but it was just the schools allowed backstage and the audience including family had to stay sitting down.

I had a quick drink and started playing hand games until we go back in to sing the other half. The song that we sang when we came back was ‘I Love My Feet’, the audience started bursting with laughter as Jackie was walking with fake humongous feet on her, feet. As we were singing it came onto the last ‘Say Goodbye’ which also happened to be my other favorite song. I didn’t really want to leave when we singing and also walking away, it was actually fun. On our way back to school and we all fell off to sleep. As the van stopped I opened the door and saw my dad talking to my friend’s family as he waited. I walked towards him and saw my mum in the car. I think she asked me a question if it was fun, but I was kind half asleep so I couldn’t really remember. To me, I know that this was a most fun event out of all that has happened at school because the friends that came will be the friends I will remember.

How would you keep Guy Fawkes safe?

WALHT: Write a report of how to keep Guy Fawkes safe.

This is how I kept Guy Fawkes safe by following what it says on my Google Drawing report. If you had to choose of keeping Guy Fawkes safe and listen to these rules or would you ignore these rules and be risky and dangerous?

Who would you have chosen?

Image result for St. Therese
For my Confirmation, I would have chosen St. Thérèse. Because she would never give up in her downfalls and would never let anything get in her way. St. Thérèse was a really strong role model and still is to this day. Even though she would make mistakes, she would still know how to make things better to confess her sins to the Lord.

I am glad that I got to learn about St. Thérèse because I get to choose her as my role model for Confirmation.

Making Decisions

Making Decisions

Hone
Hone has just made it into the school cricket team.  Hone is fielding on the boundary line.  A ball comes straight for him on the full and he catches it.  Everyone cheers.  Then he notices his foot is over the line - therefore the player is not out at all and has hit a six.  The umpire didn’t see and asks Hone whether he caught the ball over the line or not.   What could Hone do?

A. List Options:
Tell the truth
2
Tell a lie

B Say what is right or wrong about each option.
Option 1
It’s right to tell the truth
Option 2
Telling a lie would be wrong

C.  Say what would be the consequences of each option for everyone concerned.
1. When you tell the truth it would be right but then he would lose.

2. When you lie about it later on you will feel guilty.

What values you think lie behind each option and tick those that reflect gospel values -  the values of Jesus.
1. Responsibility, Humilty, Fairness.

2. Guilty, Sin, Disobey

Which option you would have chosen and why.

  1. To tell the truth, because you won’t feel guilty, and you’ll know that you’ve done the right thing.

Making choices in life can be difficult and challenging. But when you know what decision is right and just, then it won’t be as hard to choose.

Do you know how to make sugar look like glass?

Melting sugar

Today at technicraft we melted different types of sugar and tasted it, some of them were not so nice and some of them were, here is how.

What you will need:

  • Tripod
  • Gauze mat
  • Meths burner
  • Matches/Lighter
  • Types of sugar
  • Damp cloth
  • Tin foil
  • Toothpick

Method:

  1. Place your tripod on a flat surface
  2. Add your gauze mat onto the top of the tripod.
  3. Curve the sides of the tin foil and place over gauze mat
  4. Pour what type of your sugar you want into the middle of the tin foil
  5. Move the meths burner underneath the tripod
  6. Light up one of the matches and light up the  meths burner
  7. Mix the sugar around with the side of the toothpick (When the consistency is much like liquid then it is done)
  8. Take it off of the tripod and place it down
  9. Let it turn back into a solid, and the consistency will then be like glass, but edible

Sugar spider webs (Optional)

If you have decided to make sugar spider webs like these, follow the instructions below.

  1. Grab a new toothpick or just use the other side of the older toothpick you would have recently used
  2. Dip the toothpick into the melted sugar
  3. Slowly take it out leaving the string still attached to the toothpick...
Be careful because if it is still liquid then it will be really hot
Final note:
It’s okay if it turns back into solid because then at least you will have a lot of fun, with it looking like glass

What did you do on the holiday?

Screenshot 2016-05-02 at 12.00.05 PM.png

Rotorua

One Saturday, during the holidays, my family and I went on a trip to Rotorua. It took a few hours to get there, but we were used to it. The hotel we mostly stay at when we go to Rotorua, is the Quality Inn.  The reason we always stay there is because we  really know the area around there. Once we had unpacked, we sat and chatted sharing our ideas about what we would do the next day.

When we woke the following morning, my mum suggested going to Skyline. This is an entertainment place in Rotorua. As I had been there before, I was eager to return to  my favourite activity -  the skyswing. Sitting  on a chair, cradled in a steel frame, designed to prevent falling out together with large adjustable safety buckles to wear around your waist, it helped me to feel a little more secure. Someone checked that I was buckled in correctly and following this, the large steel cable lifted me up high above the ground. A sudden jerk, let me know that I was at the top and my swing was about to begin. Suddenly I felt myself being swiftly propelled horizontally. A gust of wind continually battered my face and blew my hair around.  Once it slowed down I started to feel a little dizzy. Next stop, “The Luge’

This steep, curved raceway is so popular, that there was a long queue waiting, like me to face the challenge. The line was so long we had to wait for like around an hour.  Once it was my turn, I  sat on the little seat (which they call luge carts). When getting in I had to remember to be really careful because there is a handle in front of you when you sit down, and when you push it forward then you’ll quickly drive forward. Not being able to control this, often causes people to crash bump into someone else. I watched with great interest as others made this mistake and was determined not to do that myself. I also knew (from past experience) that If you pull the handle towards you quickly,  you  go flying.  Unfortunately,  there’s no seatbelt, that’s why you have to safely and slowly pull it towards you.

People (supervisors and others who had already had a turn)  warned us and the other people to be careful because if you’re going too fast and turn you’ll fall right off the luge cart and possibly you’d slide off  the track and into the trees, While I was riding on the luge cart I kept the warning in mind, so that I wouldn’t choose the same mistakes as the other people had. I was still on the track and when I was almost near the end, there was a tunnel to go through to reach the final point, but as I went through the tunnel, I saw another person riding as well, when we made it out of the tunnel I heard a stumble. I looked back and realised that the other person had fallen. I was going to try and turn back around to help her, but she had already gotten up herself so I just kept driving forward. When I reached the end of the track, I got off and sat on a chair which turns around and takes you back up to the beginning again.

At the top I saw my mum and dad waiting for my sister, brother and I. Just after I got up my brother and sister came up too. We all thought that we had, had was enough for today, so we went back to the hotel. On Monday we didn’t really feel like doing anything again so we came back to Auckland. I can’t wait until the next time we return to Rotorua.
